About Island Art & Design
Island Art & Design was conceived as the means to tell the Artist and Designer's side of the story in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
Envisioned by the Advocate Integrated Media (AIM) team, it functions as an outlet for the creative editors of and the artists featured by the magazine,
and as a platform to: witness past events, announce the latest trends, current fads or design rules within this Diaspora, and to keep the public abreast of any future events or developments about to be unleashed by the inhabitants of the Art and Design world.
The Web site
IAD is an online magazine which is updated monthly with new content. It was designed to mirror the issue of a real-world
magazine distributed at the typical news stand or store, and contains several features peculiar to that kind of distribution. Why? Because the AIM team always tries to do things a bit differently than the rest, no matter how "way out" or "unorthodox" it may seem at the time. Because Artists are trend-setters.
IAD contains seven main sections and a search area, Four of these sections are for different types of articles including:
- General Articles; in which various topics related to All areas of Art are divulged (whether they be the traditional, fine arts like Painting, Sculpture or Ceramics, or applied arts like Graphic Design, Architecture, and Visual Multimedia)
- Product Reviews; the place to "window shop" for products and services related to Art and Design, to visually "try before you buy".
- Tutorials; where you actually learn a thing or two about anything that can be taught
- Artist of the Month; a special article, which features an artist or designer whom IAD has seen fit to set apart for special mention.
The other three sections are related to the magazine itself and promotions. They include:
- Editorial Letter; which also changes every month and opens that "issue" with the overall tone and / or the main subject matter that will be featured
- Fan Mail; where true fans, visitors, or anyone interested in the development of the magazine or AIM
can have a voice and speak their minds
- Coming Events; where we keep you "up to date" and "up to the time" with a myriad of the "hottest" things scheduled to come from the art and design world.
IAD As a Product
This magazine represents phase one of AIM's plan to sensitize the Caribbean region to the importance and relevance of Art and Design culture and to indeed make it receive it's true recognition. We feel that that particular field of study has gotten a "bad rap" in our society, and that the onus is on us to "rectify" that. The move to marry technology with artistic effort in order to
achieve this has no doubt been already done, but we hope to do this on an even wider, more integrated scale. The net result; the promotion and thrust of the Caribbean in the direction where the world can witness the incredible, untapped talent that this Diaspora has to offer. Thank you for beginning on that journey with us.
